The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Haslam College of Business has had the right to display the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) logo since 1941. We were the 53rd school to earn this distinguished accreditation, and currently 650 schools worldwide hold this honor.
When AACSB began accrediting accounting programs within business colleges in 1982, our accounting department was in the first group of eight schools to receive the endorsement.
In Spring 2012, UT went through the five-year maintenance of accreditation process for both the college and its accounting program and received official notification of continued accreditation of both until 2017.
At the heart of AACSB is its rigorous accreditation standards and its dedication to the peer-review process. Accreditation teams include deans (and accounting department heads when accounting programs are being reviewed) from other AACSB-accredited schools.
The AACSB evaluates three strategic areas for Maintenance of Accreditation:
Within those three areas are 21 different business standards. For accounting accreditation, there are an additional 15 standards that are built on the original 21.
For most business colleges, the Assurance of Learning standards contain the hardest requirements to meet; it asks for evidence that students are learning what you are teaching.
"UT's Haslam College of Business is on a positive trend line, and its future is bright. It has a reputation for building cross-functional, interdisciplinary programs that began in executive education and the full-time MBA and has been extended to many other programs in the college, including the undergraduate program and the Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovations."
