Amelia Hart

Amelia Hart joined the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Haslam College of Business’ Department of Accounting and Information Management (AIM) faculty in 2018. She serves as the co-coordinator of the UT AIM Academy, a summer program that hosts rising high school juniors from underrepresented groups for an integrated collegiate experience that introduces the field of accounting and information management. She is a member of the Teaching and Learning Innovation Task Force Advisory team (under UT’s Division of Faculty Affairs), serving as a thought leader and ambassador, demonstrating, creating and connecting efforts across disciplines and educational contexts as the university’s home for faculty development and for integrating curricular best practices in diversity, equity and inclusion in teaching. Hart serves on UT’s Faculty Senate as one of the faculty leaders who advocate, advise and recommend on policy matters related to the wellbeing of the faculty, as well as serving on the UT Haslam Scholars selection committee. She is currently serving as the 2023 vice president of the Ph.D. Project’s Accounting Faculty Alumni Association (AFAA).

Hart served as the co-chair of the American Accounting Association (AAA) Teaching, Learning and Curriculum and Diversity conferences, hosted in San Antonio, Texas, in 2022 and in Bethesda, Md., in 2021. She previously served as faculty advisor for the UT chapters of Beta Alpha Psi and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) Inc. She is the recipient of a Teaching and Learning Innovation Faculty Leader Award (2022), a Course Redesign Institute Award (2021) and the Decosimo Faculty Leadership Award (2021). In addition, she has been a finalist for the Richard C. Reizenstein Outstanding Commitment to Students Award (2021) and a nominee for the UT Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching award (2020).

Hart frequently presents about current events related to accounting and auditing. She is a repeat guest speaker at high schools to recruit and raise awareness of the profession and has presented for audiences at the Department of Defense, American Bar Association, AGA, CPA State Societies, leadership seminars and academic conferences. She currently co-authors the Accounting and Auditing Section articles published in the Tennessee CPA Journal on a bi-monthly basis.

Her teaching experience includes courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with classes such as Introduction to Financial Accounting, Business Software Application, Accounting Information Systems, Intermediate Accounting, Advanced Accounting, Governmental and Nonprofit Accounting, Auditing, Advanced Auditing, Accounting for MBAs and Cost Management. She developed a standalone introductory online accounting course with responsibility for the studio recordings, content development and delivery for the Haslam College of Business’ B.O.S.S. summer series of online courses.

Preceding her time at UT, Hart served at other institutions as an assistant and associate professor, where her numerous roles included coordinator of accounting curricular and program activities, faculty advisor for student accounting organizations, consultant for the Center of Teaching Excellence, faculty representative and director of diversity initiatives. She has over 15 years of experience in the academy.

Hart’s doctoral research area focused on the going concern assumption: The investor’s propensity towards a Type II error in the going concern assessment: An economic evaluation of the relationship between management’s good news and unbiased evidence of financial stress in public companies.

Prior to teaching, she worked in private and public accounting in roles that included both accounting manager and controller. She is a licensed CPA in the state of Tennessee and a CGMA. Hart completed her master’s degree at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and her doctorate in accounting at Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana.
