Applications for the MSBA are submitted through the University of Tennessee’s Graduate School; however, Haslam has application requirements specific to the MSBA.
Haslam’s MSBA program seeks students with strong quantitative abilities and a desire to help businesses with their data-driven decisions. Each admission decision is based on many factors: undergraduate coursework, quantitative aptitude, undergraduate GPA, work experience, references, test scores and a personal interview.
We do not require a specific undergraduate degree. The most successful students are those who have a strong technical aptitude and have taken quantitative courses in their undergraduate program of study, such as math, statistics, engineering, computer science, and calculus.
Work exprience is not required; however, previous work experience (paid positions, internships, and/or co-operative learning) is beneficial. Due to the lock-step nature of our program, transfer credits are not accepted.
We encourage students to use the interview as an opportunity to make sure our program is a good fit for them. We prefer to meet students in-person, and ask that they make every attempt to schedule a campus visit. If this is not possible, we can arrange a Zoom interview.
The MSBA is a highly specialized, academically rigorous program; therefore, applicants with undergraduate GPAs below 3.0 are not typically considered. While our average GPA varies with each incoming class, it typically averages 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.
Under typical circumstances, GRE/GMAT scores are required of all applicants; however, due to COVID-19, we will consider exam waiver requests on a case-by-case basis. To request an exam waiver, email Courtney Shaffer (firstname.lastname@example.org) with a copy of your academic history and your resume.
We do not have a minimum score requirement for the GRE or GMAT; however, students best-suited for our program typically perform well above-average on the quantitative portion.
English Language Certification:
Non-native English speakers may be required to submit results of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Minimum score requirements for admission to the MSBA program are: 100 or higher on the TOEFL iBT or 7.5 or higher overall band score on the IELTS. The scores will be considered valid if submitted with the application within two (2) years of the test date.
An applicant may be exempted from the English Certification requirement if:
- English is an official language in the applicant’s country of citizenship, according to standards published by the Graduate School; or
- English is the primary language of instruction at the institution in which the applicant received an undergraduate, graduate, or professional degree.
Please refer to the Graduate School's website for more details.
