Welcome to the Fall 2021 Business Analytics Forum, presented by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Haslam College of Business. At this forum, you will explore business analytics opportunities and challenges with industry professionals, business analytics faculty who are at the forefront of the discipline, and talented business analytics students who are eager to engage with and learn from leaders in their chosen field.

This year’s program was inspired by feedback from forum partners, reflecting the industry’s most current issues and solutions and the latest possibilities for business analytics applications. The theme of this year’s forum is Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Practice.

Keynote 1: Data Analytics in Government and Private Industry

Speaker: Brian Worley

In the last 20 years, data analytics has progressed from big data to deep mining to artificial intelligence to become pervasive in every element of daily life. This progression is reviewed from the perspective of the development and application of data analytics at a national research laboratory, a small private startup, and a large private startup, comparing various aspects of how data analytics supports the overall mission and vision of these three types of enterprises.

There will be assigned seating for lunch, and at least one faculty member or corporate partner will be at each table. This will promote communication and increase networking opportunities.

Keynote 2: How to effectively use AI and what the future hold for AI

Speaker: Thomas E. Potok
Location: SU 270

A brief history of AI and successful AI projects developed at ORNL, ranging from cancer outcome prediction to autonomous driving to scientific breakthrough prediction will be presented. Discuss follows, focusing on successfully managing AI projects, from picking the right AI problem to tackle to managing the risks of developing a new technology. Emerging trends in the field of AI that may impact businesses will also be reviewed.

2:35 pm - 5:00 pm

Roundtable Discussion

Location: SU 272 B

Faculty will choose discussion topics from suggestions received during registration. Attendees will gather in groups of 7-10 at a table to discuss one of these pressing analytics topics. Every 25 minutes, attendees will rotate to another table with a new group to discuss the next topic, ensuring that everyone has a chance to discuss the topics with many different attendees.
