Adjunct Professor, Lean for Healthcare, Chief Medical Officer, and TeamHealth

Dr. Crane, a board-certified, practicing Emergency Physician, is considered one of the leading experts in Emergency Department Operations in the United States. He speaks internationally on a variety of topics in Emergency Medicine and Lean Healthcare, and currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer for TeamHealth, a provider staffing organization with over 500 EM contracts in the United States.

Dr. Crane began his career in Emergency Medicine in Fredericksburg, Virginia at Mary Washington Healthcare in 2000. There he served as Director of Operations for his Emergency Medicine physician group from 2004 to 2009, leading a number of innovative changes in his ED. He later served as Senior Medical Director for Stafford Hospital and served on the Mary Washington Healthcare Board of Trustees from 2011-2013. At Mary Washington Healthcare, Dr. Crane was awarded the Physician of the Year and Outstanding Leader awards. In 2012, Dr. Crane was recruited to work for The Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group as Associate Regional Medical Director with oversight of Acute Care Services, Telemedicine, Innovation, and Medicare/Medicaid for Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland. From December 2014 to December 2017, he served as the Chief Clinical Operations Officer of the Emergency Medicine Division of Sheridan Healthcare, deploying ED improvement across a national platform of emergency departments.

In addition to his local efforts, Dr. Crane graduated from the Physician Executive MBA Program (PEMBA) at the University of Tennessee in 2004, where he currently serves as a faculty member, teaching physician-led operations and performance improvement, specifically addressing the application of lean manufacturing concepts within the healthcare environment. Dr. Crane received the Educator of the Year award from the University of Tennessee in 2011, 2013 and 2015. Dr. Crane is also an Emergency Medicine faculty member of The Institute for Healthcare Improvement and serves as an advisor for the National Institute for Health Research’s Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care in Northwest London. Dr. Crane is a faculty of the American College of Emergency Physicians ED Directors’ Academy where he teaches ED Best Practices for staffing and flow optimization. In 2016, he received the Honorable Mention for the Speaker of the Year from ACEP. Through these and other endeavors, Dr. Crane has worked with hundreds of emergency departments from around the world on adopting innovations in healthcare delivery. He has taught and worked in a wide variety of settings on six continents, including courses or sessions at The University of Tennessee, The University of Kansas, George Mason University, Harvard University, and Cambridge University.
