Marketing, Supply Chain Management - Faculty

Mark Moon has been researching demand/supply integration and demand management for nearly 20 years. He brought this expertise to bear when he was named as head of the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management back in 2011. “Marketing is all about demand, and Supply Chain is all about supply, and demand/supply integration is what brings those disciplines together,” he explains. During his tenure as department head, MSCM continued on its path of excellence in both marketing and supply chain management. The Supply Chain major is now the largest major at the University of Tennessee, and faculty in both disciplines have been recognized as important thought leaders. Of special note is the fact that both U.S. News and World Report and Gartner have named UT 3rd among all public institutions in the field of Supply Chain Management. “I’m proud of what our team has accomplished over the past five years,” Moon says. “Our next department head, Chad Autry, will only continue and accelerate the trajectory that we’re on.”

Beginning in summer 2016, Moon will become director of the Global Leadership Scholars, Haslam’s undergraduate honors program. As director, he will ensure that Haslam’s top students obtain a globally focused educational experience. “For the past five years, during my term as department head, I contributed through service to the faculty and to the department as a whole,” Moon says. “Now, I’m excited about contributing through service to students. That’s what I hope to accomplish in my term as GLS director.”

Moon teaches undergraduate, MBA and executive MBA classes. He says the culture at Haslam has played a key role in his success.

“We welcome business leaders here and are truly interested in their issues and problems,” Moon says. “It’s important to us that we produce students who can help businesses be successful and that we conduct research that truly matters.” Moon is an associate professor of marketing, and the Flaskerud Faculty Fellow. He came to Haslam in 1993 after obtaining his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He worked in sales and marketing with IBM and Xerox prior to pursing his doctorate and earned his MBA and BA degrees from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Moon was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He and his wife, Carol, have between them three sons, one daughter and two granddaughters. Away from the office, Moon enjoys traveling with his family, floating down the Tennessee River on his pontoon, and golf with his sons, who now beat him regularly.
