Executive Director Chosen for Young Alumni Award by Alma Mater

June 12, 2017

The Pulliam School of Journalism at Franklin College recently recognized Tanya Brown, executive director of marketing and public relations for the Haslam College of Business, with its Young Alumni Award.

“Tanya’s academic ability, drive and work ethic were evident from the time she matriculated,” said Joel E. Cramer, division head for Pulliam. “The Pulliam School of Journalism Young Alumni Award was given in recognition of the realization of the promise Tanya exhibited as student. We are proud of her achievements and to have her representing Franklin College and the Pulliam School of Journalism.”

Brown joined the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 2013 as its first executive director of marketing and public relations. Since then, she has recruited a team of five professionals and multiple interns to overhaul the college’s website, social media, magazine and marketing materials for its six departments, seven centers and institutes, forums and graduate and executive education programs. In her tenure, she has overseen the renaming of the college, a change in its branding and logo, a 139-percent increase in website traffic and a 91-percent increase in media coverage.

“I’m certain I would not have received this award without my coming to Haslam and creating the in-house agency approach we live by,” Brown said. “Franklin and the Pulliam School of Journalism gave me a firm foundation in journalism and all the liberal arts upon which to build the career of my dreams. They taught me not only how to solve problems but how to think through, create and execute a vision. I’m honored to have received this award, and proud to be a Franklin College alumna.”

Before joining Haslam, Brown served as director of communications at the University of Tennessee’s College of Law. Previously, she worked as a marketing consultant and business media manager at Purdue University and as a higher education reporter for the Lafayette Journal & Courier.

Brown shares the award with an assistant news director of the NBC affiliate in Chicago and an Indianapolis news anchor. Recipients are selected by vote of the Pulliam School of Journalism faculty and staff. This is the second year Pulliam has bestowed a young alumni award.
