Mark Collins, a faculty member at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Haslam College of Business and member of the UT faculty senate, received the senate’s Heart and Soul Award during its February meeting. Andrea Joseph-McCatty of UT’s College of Social Work also received this recognition.
Collins thanked the organization for the accolade, saying, “I am honored to receive the faculty senate’s Heart and Soul Award. Helping build a welcoming university environment is an effort I support wholeheartedly, and being acknowledged for this commitment is very meaningful to me.”
Fostering a Healthy Climate
In announcing the award, Derek H. Alderman, Chancellor’s Professor in UT’s Department of Geography and Sustainability and faculty senate president, cited the award recipients’ many achievements. Alderman praised Collins, distinguished lecturer in Haslam’s Department of Marketing and director of its MS in marketing program, for innovative teaching, fostering inclusivity and supporting colleagues.
“His creative use of technology builds community and enhances learning,” Alderman wrote. “A key leader during the COVID-19 online transition, he helped faculty work as a team in adapting to new methods.”
According to Alex Zablah, head of the marketing department, Gerber/Taylor Distinguished Professor and Kinney Family Faculty Research Fellow, Collins’ contributions to the department are incredibly impactful.
“Mark consistently goes above and beyond to foster a space where everyone feels valued and heard,” Zablah said. “This recognition is a testament to the profound impact he has made, and we are incredibly fortunate to have him as part of our faculty.”
About the Heart and Soul Award
The faculty senate introduced its Heart and Soul Award for the 2024-2025 academic year as part of a broader initiative to affirm UT’s commitment to being a welcoming, inclusive and safe community grounded in civility. It is reserved for faculty members who are held in especially high regard by their colleagues, students and communities. Given at the beginning of each senate meeting, the award honors faculty members who significantly create a supportive, inclusive climate in their academic areas and the university.
