Haslam Welcomes New Class of Freshmen and MBAs

September 11, 2018

An athlete, a railroad conductor and a meteorologist walk into a classroom at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. This is not the beginning of a stale joke, but the reality for this year’s full-time MBA class at the Haslam College of Business. The group brings an average of nearly five years of work experience to their continuing academic career, time that also includes athletic, educational and military accolades.

“It has been an exciting fall so far as we have welcomed 260 new master’s students to Haslam,” says Mary Goss, executive director of graduate business programs. “We are extremely proud of the entering classes for all of our programs and the talent they bring both inside and outside the classroom.”

Incoming MBA students boast an average GPA of 3.5 and a GMAT score of 655, placing them in the top 76th percentile nationally.

Haslam’s undergraduate class also shows strong academic talent, with average scores ranging from a 3.8 high school GPA to an ACT score of 27 and an SAT score of 1212.

Of the estimated 1,084 incoming Haslam students, some 37 percent are declaring majors in either supply chain management or marketing. Management, finance, business analytics and statistics, and accounting also remain popular, with 10 to 15 percent of incoming students entering into each program. Economics, business exploratory, public administration and human resource management represent an additional 11 percent of the incoming student group.
