Two faculty members in the Department of Accounting and Information Management at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Haslam College of Business, recently received new titles. Jong Seok Lee, associate professor and Lou and Sherlene Schumacher Business Faculty Fellow, was appointed to the Williams Professorship. Roy Schmardebeck associate professor, Haslam Family Faculty Research Fellow and Martin Lee and Carol Fri Robinson Faculty Fellow, is now the Forvis Mazars Professor of Accounting.
Terry L. Neal, Richard L. Townsend Distinguished Accounting Chair at Haslam and head of the department, called Lee and Schmardebeck’s appointments a fitting recognition of their work.
“We are incredibly proud of Dr. Lee and Dr. Schmardebeck for receiving these well-deserved professorships,” Neal said. “Their contributions as scholars and educators continue to elevate our department’s impact. We are also grateful to the generous donors who made this recognition possible. Their support allows us to honor excellence and continue advancing the mission of our department.”
Lee and Schmardebeck are highly regarded in their respective professional societies and are seen as emerging thought leaders in their intellectual spaces. Jong’s research focuses on advancing the understanding of IT project management, software development and strategic adaptation, while Schmardebeck’s research examines the impact of corporate governance and managerial discretion on financial reporting and corporate disclosure. Both expressed appreciation for receiving their new appointments.
“I am incredibly grateful and honored to have received this professorship,” Lee said. “I am proud to be part of the Haslam College of Business, and I hope to continue to contribute to the college and make a positive impact.”
Schmardebeck added, “I’m honored and deeply grateful to be appointed as the Forvis Mazars Professor of Accounting. This recognition is especially meaningful given the firm’s impressive legacy and commitment to excellence. This professorship will provide valuable support in furthering my efforts to advance accounting scholarship and education.”
