Core Clinical Partners, a leading national healthcare practice management company, launched an Emergency and Hospital Medicine Administrative Fellowship program to provide its physician partners with essential operational experience and leadership development. As part of the program, Core is working with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Haslam College of Business to send fellowship candidates to Haslam’s Physician Executive MBA (PEMBA) program.
About the Fellowship Program
Core’s two-year fellowship integrates clinical practice with leadership development and operational experience. It offers hands-on learning in emergency or hospital medicine with key leadership training and education. In the program’s first year, participants earn their MBA through Haslam’s PEMBA program. In the second year, they hone their clinical skills, take on administrative duties and experience diverse clinical environments or undertake an immersive experience at a single site. In the final six months, participants engage actively in site leadership as associate directors.
Benefits of the program include enjoying the support and mentorship of the Core’s leadership team while earning an MBA, multiple networking opportunities, access to experts in all aspects of clinical services and attendance at Core Leadership conferences, American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and/or Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM).
Collaboration with Teamwork at Its Core
Core Clinical Partners is one of the fastest-growing and organically grown physician staffing companies in the country, while Haslam’s PEMBA is the first executive MBA program created exclusively for MDs. In many ways, the two complement each other perfectly, especially since Boykin Robinson (PEMBA, ’18), Core’s founder and CEO, is a PEMBA alum.
Kate Atchley, distinguished lecturer and director of the PEMBA program, knows Robinson has a true passion for forming meaningful partnerships. She recognized at once the value in offering Core physician partners the opportunity to expand their leadership skill sets through PEMBA.
“We are thrilled to work with Core Clinical Partners to enable its top-tier physician partners to earn their MBAs through our dynamic, experiential learning PEMBA program as part of their fellowships,” Atchley said. “More MDs with C-suite skills translates to more healthcare organizations with leaders who focus on best patient outcomes as well as company performance. Given the high caliber of Core’s physician partners, we fully expect this new initiative could offer more synergistic opportunities in the future.”
Robinson added that Core’s dedication to compassionate care through true partnership led his team to develop the fellowship program with PEMBA in mind.
“I was impressed with my experience in Haslam’s Physician Executive MBA program,” Robinson explained. “The teamwork required on the program’s projects resonated with me, because teamwork is an essential component of partnership and foundational to what we do at Core. So, as we formulated the idea of the fellowship program, I knew offering the chance to earn an MBA at Haslam should be part of the mix. We are excited to launch the Emergency and Hospital Medicine Administrative Fellowship program, and I am confident our physician partners will find the PEMBA program bolsters their business savvy and leadership toolkits more than they could imagine.”
Fellowship Program Logistics
Core’s first Emergency and Hospital Medicine Administrative Fellowship program will begin in July 2025 and run through June 2027. The program is open to all Core Clinical Partners physicians with a strong desire to improve their business and leadership abilities.
