The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, recently came in at No. 23 nationally for its contributions to operations research practice literature in the 12th Rothkopf Rankings. The rankings were published in the INFORMS Journal on Applied Analytics.

“It is rewarding to see our faculty’s contributions to the practice literature in operations research acknowledged,” says Michael R. Galbreth, head of the Department of Business Analytics and Statistics in the Haslam College of Business at UT. “Our department strives to bring what’s possible into the realm of the practical in operations and other areas, and our faculty’s research is instrumental in those efforts.”

The rankings are based on an assessment of practice-focused operations research published between 2012 and 2018. The sample contained works from 115 U.S. schools and 144 non-U.S. schools in 43 countries. Some 634 unique academic authors contributed to these works, with 353 of those from affiliated institutions in the U.S. and 281 from institutions outside the country.

Haslam Business Analytics and Statistics researchers focus on developing fresh insights and knowledge of business performance based on data analysis and statistical methods to better inform decision-making and business planning processes. Their work contributes to a breadth of practical applications in real-world situations, including such areas as improving hospital inventory management, assessing and fast-tracking crowdsourced ideas, better targeting of potential customers through more robust profiling and streamlining supply chains.
