Internship opportunities exist in all fields of study and positions are available at most major organizations. Internships are usually conducted during the summer, but some are available during the school year. Summer internship recruitment begins in February and usually ends in mid-April. Internships can be paid or unpaid and may be for course credit. It is important that students identify what type of internship will best benefit their job prospects and their schedule before applying.
Why an Internship Is Important?
By participating in an internship, students gain a competitive advantage for future employment. Internships provide meaningful work experience, chances to network and an introduction to a potential career or employer. Students will accumulate new skills and gain a firsthand perspective on how to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world.
Internships also help students gain confidence in their post-graduation job search. In completing an internship, students gain experience finding a position, interviewing for jobs and successfully completing tasks required in the workplace. Paid, unpaid and for-credit internships all provide a multitude of benefits that span beyond a resume.
The Haslam College of Business and our partners at UT Career Services are here to support students during their internship journey, from deciding what type of position best serves their career goals to appropriate behavior on the job.
