Cost & Financial Aid

It is important to consider total cost for programs when choosing the study abroad program that is right for you. Here are some items to consider when it comes to the cost of studying abroad:

Faculty-directed Programs

For Spring-term programs, tuition and fees will be rolled into your full course load tuition.

For Mini- and Summer-term programs, costs will be assessed through myUTK.

Details about expenses are broken down at programsabroad.utk.edu.

Students will be charged the university’s Study Abroad Fee of $175 in addition to their deposit.

Program Fee

This fee will vary by program but includes all compulsory group expenses such as accommodations, in-country transportation, tours/excursion, and some group meals over the dates of the program.

International Airfare

International airfare is not included in the tuition and fees. Program faculty will advise their students on how to purchase airline tickets and make their own travel schedules available. Students may travel with faculty or fly on their own. In many cases, students may be able to go early or stay later, as long as they arrive to their program on time and stay through the full duration.

Personal Expenses

While many expenses will be included in the program fee, students should also budget for some meals, the purchase of a passport or visa if needed and additional personal spending and travel.

Affiliate Programs

With affiliate programs, you will not pay for your program cost to your myUTK, but rather directly to the affiliate provider. Be sure to check with your program what your program fee covers, but typically the total amount will cover: tuition and fees, housing, on-site support, your visa assistance, and some programmatic activities.

Affiliate programs will not, however, cover your international airfare, personal expenses, and meals. Students will also be charged the university’s Study Abroad Fee of $175 in addition to their deposit.

Exchange Programs

Exchange programs offers students a unique cost model for study abroad programs. With our exchange partners, students pay UT tuition, the study abroad fee, and international insurance to cover the cost of the program. These fees are paid directly to your myUTK. Your housing will not typically be billed to your myUTK. Please refer to your program’s cost sheet, located at the top of your program page to see a full breakdown of costs.

Direct Enroll Programs

Direct enroll programs are different from an exchange program in that you will pay your program fees directly to your host institution. The only cost that will be billed to your myUTK will be your study abroad fee of $175.

Academic Internships

Academic Internship programs function very similarly to a UT faculty-directed or exchange program, in that all of your tutition and program fees will be charged to your myUTK. The program fee will also include housing, but will not include your flight, meals, or personal expenses. Please refer to your program’s cost sheet, located at the top of your program page to see a full breakdown of costs.
