Haslam College of Business - Census: Franklin, Tenn., among the Fastest-Growing Large Cities in Nation

Franklin, Tennessee, is among the 15 fastest-growing large cities in the United States, according to population estimates released May 24 by the U.S. Census Bureau and disseminated by the Tennessee State Data Center.

Among these cities those that also had a population of 50,000 or more, eight of them were located in the south in 2017.

“The south and west continue to be the fastest growing regions in the nation,” says Melissa Stefanini, director of the Tennessee State Data Center. “Following state trends, the large cities that continue to see the fastest growth are in Middle Tennessee.”

The statistics released today cover all local governmental units, including incorporated places, minor civil divisions and consolidated cities. The Census Bureau will release additional population estimates by age, sex, race and Hispanic origin for the nation, states and counties on June 21.

Franklin was the fastest-growing large city in Tennessee from 2016 to 2017 for the first time since 2013. For the years between, Murfreesboro was the fastest-growing large city in the state. Franklin’s population increased from 74,685 in 2016 to 78,321 in 2017, an increase of 4.9 percent.

The two cities that rounded out the top three fastest-growing large cities in Tennessee were Murfreesboro with 3.8 percent, and Clarksville, Tenn., with 2.5 percent. All three cities are located in Middle Tennessee.
