Haslam College of Business - Behn Honored With Accounting Outstanding Service Award

The American Accounting Association (AAA) has named Bruce Behn, associate dean for graduate and executive education and Deloitte LLP Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Haslam College of Business, as the recipient of its 2020 Outstanding Service Award. Behn was presented with the honor during the AAA Annual Meeting and Conference on Teaching and Learning in Accounting, held virtually in August.

The award’s purpose is to recognize outstanding services to the AAA beyond educational and research contributions. 

“[This] prestigious award is intended only for rare events or milestones achieved,” said Nancy Maciag, executive and board services manager for AAA. “For 2020, the American Accounting Association is extremely pleased to be able to present this award to Bruce K. Behn in honor of his dedicated service to the education and practice of accounting.”

Behn is currently chair of the AAA’s Accounting Hall of Fame committee, a member of the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA) board, vice chair of the Accounting Accreditation Policy Committee for the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and a council member for the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants. Recently he chaired the AAA’s executive director search committee, served on the International Accounting Education Standards Board and chaired the AAA/AICPA Pathways Commission. He is a past president of the AAA, the International Accounting Section of the AAA, and the Federation of Schools of Accountancy (FSA), as well as past chair of the AICPA’s Pre-certification Education Executive Committee. 

“Bruce has a long history of service to the AAA and to the accounting profession, and he is very deserving of this recognition,” said Terry Neal, department head of accounting and information management at Haslam. “Although the AAA has only given its Outstanding Service Award a total of 19 times, this is the second time Bruce has been recognized with the award.”

Behn previously won the award in 2013.

“I am the luckiest guy on the planet,” Behn said. “In all my service roles, I have been honored to work with so many amazing individuals and have learned so much.”
