Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers Kevin A. Hassett, an expert in the field of public finance, will speak at the Knoxville Economics Forum in downtown Knoxville later this month.
Hassett, who was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Sept. 13, 2017, and sworn into office the next day, advises President Donald Trump on economic policy and prepares the annual Economic Report of the President. He will speak at the forum on Nov. 27 at Club LeConte, atop the First Tennessee Building, 800 S. Gay St.
“Chairman Hassett is a world-class economist and a reliable voice for sound economic policy in Washington,” said Marianne Wanamaker, an associate professor of economics at the University of Tennessee who worked alongside Hassett on the White House Council of Economic Advisors in a one-year appointment as chief domestic economist. “His speech at the forum is bound to be one of our most notable events.”
The forum is organized by the Department of Economics in the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee. Breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by the program at 8 a.m. The event costs $20, and registration is now open.
“It is an honor for the Knoxville Economics Forum to host Dr. Hassett,” said Matthew Murray, professor of economics and associate director of UT’s Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research.
“Our goal for the forum is to bring people of stature to the community who can inform the business community and policymakers, and there is no better person to do this than the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors,” Murray added.
Before joining the Council of Economic Advisers, Hassett was the director of research for domestic policy and the James Q. Wilson Chair in American Culture and Politics at the American Enterprise Institute, where he had worked since 1997. Hassett received his bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College and his doctorate in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
Hassett has served in varying other economic roles, including senior economist at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, an associate professor of economics and finance at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business, and an advisor to presidential campaigns.
