Biography

Garriy Shteynberg is a professor in the Department of Marketing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Haslam College of Business. He studies how shared experiences shape the way people think, choose and trust, both individually and collectively. His work sits at the intersection of behavioral science, social psychology and consumer behavior, examining the psychological mechanisms behind group perception, consumer decision-making and the emerging dynamics of human-AI interaction. 

His current work focuses on consumer trust in AI systems and the societal effects of organized disinformation. Shteynberg has been recognized with the UT Chancellor’s Professional Promise in Research and Creative Achievement Award, the College of Arts and Sciences Senior Research Award, and he has been elected a Fellow of the Society of Experimental Social Psychology and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. 

Before joining the marketing faculty at Haslam, Shteynberg spent more than a decade as a professor of psychology and neuroscience at UT and previously held a research appointment at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.  

He has published in premier journals across disciplines, including the Journal of Consumer Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Trends in Cognitive Sciences and Psychological Review. Shteynberg serves as senior personnel and co-PI on federal grants totaling more than $19 million from the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. 

Outside the lab, Shteynberg trains corporate and medical executives in negotiation and consults for enterprise analytics firms.
