Connecting the future of education to the future of business

Emerging technologies like AI change the way business organizations operate and grow. The Institute for the Future of Business at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Haslam College of Business unites business leaders, researchers, educators and students to explore the immediate and long-term effects of those groundbreaking technologies — and to promote human-centered use.
AI’s explosive impact was the initial catalyst for the institute, but its focus and mission extend beyond any single technology. It will advance understanding of the innovations that are shifting business models and upending workforce expectations with the goal of preparing tomorrow’s leaders with technological knowledge and distinctly human skills, including ethical judgment and creative problem-solving.
The Institute for the Future of Business represents a far-reaching initiative to connect external organizations with Haslam’s breadth of business expertise and interdisciplinary approach to problem solving.

Educators exploring how changes in business should inform the future of business education, particularly at the intersection of emerging technology and workforce preparation

Students will benefit from actively engaging in real-world, industry-based projects in the classroom, while business will gain access to impactful, relevant thought leadership and prepared talent.
By fostering these connections, the Institute will create opportunities for collaboration and applied research. Students will benefit from industry-based student projects, while businesses will gain access to thought leadership and talent.

While the institute will advance and promote new ideas, it will also convert those ideas into action.
As industry partners bring real business challenges to Haslam, it will serve as a launchpad for research questions, classroom projects and new opportunities for collaboration. This approach builds on existing models for industry-based learning while focusing on new technologies and creating more opportunities for employers to connect with students and educators.
The institute’s first project is a collaboration between the Haslam College of Business and Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), supported by the AI Tennessee Initiative and the Tennessee AI Labor and Workforce Subcommittee. The partnership will connect workforce intelligence research on nationwide labor market dynamics to Tennessee-specific insights and policy recommendations. By combining large-scale data analysis with an understanding of the state’s distinct needs, the collaboration aims to give employers, educators and policymakers the evidence they require to prepare Tennessee’s workforce for an AI-enabled economy.
This work reflects the ongoing mission of the Institute for the Future of Business: ensuring that across every economic sector, and for working professionals and students alike, AI serves as an amplifier of human capability rather than a substitute for knowledge.
The institute was launched in conjunction with the Haslam AInnovation Summit 2026, which convened corporate leaders, academic researchers and industry practitioners for two days of focused collaboration on how AI is reshaping business. The event was designed as the beginning of a long-term working relationship between Haslam and its corporate and academic partners. The Institute for the Future of Business stems from that endeavor: a commitment to ongoing action around the ideas and technologies that are reshaping our world.
As technology transforms the way business functions, Haslam is dedicated to leadership with human capability at the center.
