Haslam College of Business - Alex Miller

Biography

Alex Miller is the William B. Stokely Chair in Management in the Department of Management at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Haslam College of Business. Miller’s work focuses on the business side of national defense, the business side of nonprofits and preparing the current generation of undergraduates to be future senior leaders.

Miller founded Haslam’s Aerospace Defense MBA program, and he has served on numerous defense-related boards in government and industry, including the National Academy’s USAF Research Board. He is also an adjunct faculty member at the U.S. Defense Acquisition University.

As part of his work with nonprofits, Miller was the founding board chair for the Alliance for Better Nonprofits, the Pro2Serve Director of the Consortium for Social Enterprise Effectiveness and the founder of the university’s learning by giving course.

In his research, Miller has been the principal investigator on research grants totaling nearly $20 million, and his research has been published in leading academic journals and three books.

Miller has served, and continues to serve, on numerous corporate, government and nonprofit boards. He is also a former Tennessee Cattleman of the Year and past winner of the Governor’s Award for Environmental Stewardship in recognition of his work in regenerative agriculture. His work at the university has been recognized with 14 awards for teaching and service since joining the faculty more than 40 years ago.
