Haslam College of Business - Maggie Bates

Biography

Maggie Bates is an assistant professor of practice in the Department of Accounting and Information Management at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Haslam College of Business. She teaches an introduction to audit course, preparing the next generation of accounting professionals for their future careers. Before joining Haslam, she spent 15 years with Crowe LLP, a top-15 public accounting firm, most recently serving as senior manager and leading Crowe’s Knoxville audit practice. A CPA and Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional (CCIFP), Bates served construction, manufacturing, and technology clients while leading complex audit engagements and developing professionals through technical instruction and mentoring. 

Her practice interests include auditing, construction industry accounting, project management, accounting education and professional development. Bates designed and delivered firmwide training programs in auditing, financial reporting and professional judgment, creating case-based learning that connected technical guidance to practice. 

Bates serves on the boards of Nucleus Knoxville, Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley and the Knoxville chapter of Construction Financial Management Association. In 2024, she was recognized as a Knoxville News Sentinel 40 Under 40 honoree.
