
Steven J. Stack, MD, MBA, FACEP joined the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Haslam College of Business in 2018 as an adjunct professor. In this role, he lectures on government, healthcare policy and the mechanics of advocacy to physicians in the Physician Executive MBA (PEMBA) program, as well as other healthcare leaders enrolled in executive education programs.
Stack is a board-certified emergency physician and serves as commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Public Health and chief medical officer for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
For three decades, Stack has been a leader in the medical profession. He has served on boards of directors and in senior leadership roles for non-profit medical associations. In 2006, he was the first emergency physician ever elected to the American Medical Association board of trustees, later serving as both board chair and as AMA’s youngest president since 1854.
He served as president of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) and as secretary of eHealth Initiative (eHI). Additionally, he has served on numerous federal advisory committees for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Stack has extensive experience in executive leadership, legislative and executive branch policymaking, crisis communications, advocacy and litigation at the federal, state and county levels. His expertise includes public health, government administration, health policy, non-profit governance, physician licensure, health information technology and emergency medical care and administration.
