
Tingliang (Tom) Huang
Tingliang Huang is the Amazon Distinguished Professor of Business Analytics and Analytics PhD Program Recruiting Lead in the Department of Business Analytics and Statistics in the Haslam College of Business at University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Since 2015, he is also an honorary faculty member at the School of Management, University College London (UCL), UK. Before joining UT, Huang was a tenured associate professor and the William S. McKiernan Family ’78 Faculty Fellow in the Business Analytics Department at the Carroll School of Management, Boston College. His interests include business analytics, operations-marketing interface, supply chain management, service operations, innovation and sustainable operations. His research articles have been published or accepted in top scholarly business journals, such as Manufacturing & Service Operations Management (M&SOM), Marketing Science, Management Science, and Production and Operations Management. He has won various research awards, such as the 2018 POMS Wickham Skinner Early Career Research Accomplishments Award (awarded to academics who have achieved unusually high accomplishment early in their careers), the 2018 Most Influential Paper Award in Service Operations, and the 2015 Wickham Skinner Best Paper Award published in Production and Operations Management.
His main research contributions include the earliest academic study on how to use online clickstream data to improve firms’ operations performance, a series of papers on how to factor in customer behavioral issues such as bounded rationality when making operations and marketing decisions and studies of innovative operations and marketing strategies such as click tracking, “bespoke” or mass customization, price matching, opaque or probabilistic selling, capacity rationing, lean startup method and platform marketplace selling.
Huang’s dedicated service to his research communities was repeatedly recognized with several awards, including the Management Science Meritorious Service Award (2019), the M&SOM Meritorious Service Award (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020), and the Production and Operations Management Outstanding Reviewer Award (2017). He currently serves as a senior editor for Production and Operations Management and associate editor for Naval Research Logistics and Decision Sciences.
Huang has taught courses in business analytics at undergraduate and graduate levels at institutions in Europe and in the U.S. He was recognized as a Carroll School Teaching Star, which is awarded to faculty members who serve as examples of the exceptional teaching quality and who earned the most favorable evaluations from their students while also challenging the students intellectually. He has also supervised multiple doctoral students and successfully placed them at major research universities in the U.S. and in China. He has consulted with companies such as General Mills and Synergies, among others. Huang received his doctorate from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, master’s from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, and bachelor’s from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC).
