Faculty with the Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Haslam College of Business are now at the helm of the top two economics of education academic journals: Economics of Education Review and Education Finance and Policy.
Celeste Carruthers, the William F. Fox Distinguished Professor of Labor Economics, has served as editor-in-chief at the Economics of Education Review for six years. In her role, Carruthers screens new submissions, manages a team of 11 co-editors and 10 associate editors from around the world, coordinates special issues and reports to Elsevier, the journal’s publisher.
Research assistant professor Mike Kofoed was recently selected as co-editor of the education policy journal Education Finance and Policy. In his role, Kofoed will interface with MIT Press, the journal’s publisher, and lead an editorial team of nine associate editors. He will also create and collaborate with an editorial board and work with the Association for Education Finance and Policy to promote quantitative research on timely issues.
“It is a huge honor to be selected as one of the leading co-editors of Education Finance and Policy,” says Kofoed. “It is a leading academic and intellectual venue for cutting-edge research in education policy and the economics of education. The journal’s articles have gone on to shape how the federal government, state legislatures, and local school districts make decisions that affect students every day in the classroom.”
Influential Research
According to Don Bruce, the director of the Boyd Center and Boyd Distinguished Professor at Haslam, these editorships indicate the quality of work from Carruthers and Kofoed, as well as the impact of the Boyd Center.
“I’m proud of the work that Celeste and Mike have done to establish themselves as respected thought leaders in education policy,” says Bruce. “These editorships reflect the trust that their peers have in them. As a result of their dedication and the strong support of Randy and Jenny Boyd, the Boyd Center has become one of the country’s top resources for education research at a time when that research is critically important.”
Carruthers agrees that the center has a major research influence.
“The Boyd Center is a major hub for education research,” she says. “Our K-12 and higher education research makes an impact in academic circles and in real-world education policy and practice. This environment has been great for my editorial work, where my team and I evaluate the scholarly and practical importance of new research.”
