Leveraging Analytics to Improve Hospital Operations and Care Outcomes:
BA Fridays are hosted by the University of Tennessee Business Analytics Department to showcase faculty’s applied research. This semester, we will hear about a healthcare analytics topic from Bogdan Bichescu and Haileab Hilafu.
A critical sector of the economy, healthcare faces escalating costs that strain patients and providers alike. This presentation draws on our research and explores how hospitals can harness data collected during the care delivery process and use analytics to enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and improve patient outcomes. The insights gleaned can be broadly relevant to organizations across various industries.
Speakers

Bogdan Bichescu
Bogdan C. Bichescu is an associate professor of management science in the Haslam College of Business Administration at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He teaches operations and decision analysis classes in the M.S.B.A. program, the full-time M.B.A. program, the Ph.D. program and in the undergraduate business program. His teaching interests include lean operations, decision modeling and analysis, business simulation, and project management.
Bichescu’s research interests are concentrated in the areas of supply chain modeling and healthcare operations. More specifically, his work examines the role of channel power and subcontracting on supply chain performance, while his recent studies investigate the interplay between information technology and hospital performance. Bichescu’s research has appeared in journals including Production and Operations Management, Decision Sciences,European Journal of Operational Research and Omega.
Haileab Hilafu
Haileab Hilafu is an associate professor of business analytics and statistics in the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is also James & Connie Vavalides Faculty Fellow. He teaches business analytics and statistics courses in the undergraduate and MSBA programs. His current research interests are in causal inference and statistical/machine learning, with applications in healthcare and retail operations.
Hilafu’s work has been published in refereed journals such as the Journal of Royal Statistical Society—Series B (JRSSB), Journal of Computation and Graphical Statistics (JCGS), Manufacturing and Service Operations Management (MSOM), and the Production and Operations Management (POM).
