Each year, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, honors its faculty, students, and staff for their extraordinary achievements. Those from UT’s College of Business Administration earning these prestigious honors in 2014 are detailed below:
Alumni Outstanding Teacher
As a first-year faculty member, Marianne Wanamaker’s biggest challenge was teaching a course that hadn’t ever been taught before, not just at UT, but anywhere.
The course—Market, Ethics, and Capitalism—serves as an ethics course for business majors and a gateway course for economics majors.Without previous curricula or even a textbook from which to plan, she relied on her own teaching philosophy to guide her.
She requires pre-classroom work that prompts students to think critically and creatively. Ultimately she wants to make sure the student can apply the concepts to the real world.
Torchbearer Awards
The Torchbearer is the highest honor the university can give to its students. Recognition as a Torchbearer reminds all students that those who bear the Torch of Enlightenment shadow themselves to give light to others.
Paige Atchley is a leader who thinks a lot about UT’s future Volunteers.
From Hixson, Tennessee, Atchley is a member of the Chancellor’s Honors Program and a Greg and Lisa Smith Global Leadership Scholar majoring in marketing. In addition to being vice president of the Student Government Association, she co-founded and served as the first president of Impact, a new division of the Student Alumni Associates that promotes campus traditions and encourages a culture of student philanthropy. Atchley also helped make the Senior Gift Campaign and I Heart UT Week a great success.
JASMINE HAMMONS has left no stone unturned in learning about this campus. As an ambassador for admissions and her college, she takes seriously her role as a resource for fellow Volunteers. A senior in business analytics from Bradenton, Florida, Hammons is president of the Mortar Board Society and vice president of finance for the National Pan-Hellenic Council. She also is a founding member and vice president for the UT Business Analytics Society. For the last four years, Hammons coordinated the National Foundation for Suicide Prevention campus walk. She also volunteers with Remote Area Medical, which provides basic health care to underserved populations.
