Jay BarneyHaslam College of Business community members will hear a unique perspective on strategic management March 10-11 as part of the Haslam Distinguished Scholar Speaker Series.

Jay Barney, presidential professor of strategic management and Pierre Lassonde Chair of Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business, will speak March 10 at 3:30 p.m. in HBB 402 and March 11 at 9:30 a.m. in HBB 334. The presentations are open to Haslam College of Business faculty, students and staff.

Recognized for his pioneering work outlining the resources that give firms sustained competitive advantages, Barney also is known as a dynamic speaker with an ability to connect his work broadly across several business disciplines.

“I am looking forward to visiting the Haslam College of Business,” Barney said. “It will give me an opportunity to share some ideas about the evolution of the field of strategic management with a broad academic audience.”

Barney’s presentation on Thursday, March 10, is open to Haslam faculty, students and staff. He will trace the development of strategic management as a field in relation to other research disciplines, examining both the positioning and resource-based view of the firm schools of thought.

“My central thesis is that debates in strategic management can be understood within a broader conversation about the implications of various ways markets can be imperfectly competitive,” he said.

On Friday, March 11, Barney will give a second presentation, speaking to members of the Haslam College of Business community about why the field of strategic management must adopt a stakeholder perspective.

A sociologist specialized in administrative sciences, Barney received his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and his master’s and doctorate degrees from Yale University. He also holds honorary doctorates from Sweden’s Lund University, Denmark’s Copenhagen Business School and the Comillas Pontifical University of Madrid.

The Haslam Distinguished Scholar Speaker Series was launched in 2015 with Linda Myers, distinguished professor and Ph.D. program director of accounting at the University of Arkansas, as the inaugural guest. The series seeks to bring prominent scholars from various business disciplines to campus from which the Haslam community may learn, interact and draw inspiration. Leading scholars are highlighted each academic year.
