Haslam Accounting Professor Presents at Securities and Exchange Commission

November 10, 2016

When Lauren Cunningham, assistant professor of accounting and information management, traveled to Washington, D.C., in late October for a joint conference of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board and Journal of Accounting Research, she also stopped at the Securities and Exchange Commission to present her research.

Cunningham’s attendance at the PCAOB-JAR conference and SEC presentation were by invitation only and a rare accomplishment for a researcher at her career stage, according to accounting department faculty members.

At the SEC, Cunningham presented her paper, “Examining the Usefulness of Information Revealed During the SEC Filing Review Process: Evidence from Debt Contracting,” to visiting academic fellows and economists.

“Lauren is among the leaders in this emerging research field,” said Joe Carcello, head of the Department of Accounting and Information Management. “Her research, teaching and national service contribute to the reputation of the Haslam College of Business and of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. They also ensure that our students are taught by professors on the cutting edge.”

Cunningham said she feels “humbled and grateful” for having had the opportunity to present at the SEC.

“I was able to obtain feedback on my research from multiple perspectives,” she said. “That will be invaluable as I move forward in trying to get the paper published.”
