Lauren Cunningham, assistant professor of accounting and information management and director of research for the Neel Corporate Governance Center in the Haslam College of Business, was honored with two awards at the midyear meeting of the American Accounting Association’s Audit Section, held in Houston in January.
Along with her coauthor, Sarah Stein of Virginia Tech, Cunningham received the 2020 Innovation in Auditing and Assurance Education Award. The annual award, sponsored by the American Accounting Association, recognizes work that is innovative, has educational benefits and can be adapted for a range of educational institutions and situations.
Cunningham and Stein developed a data visualization case with local weather and revenue data for the fictitious company Souper Bowl, Inc. The case allows students to use Tableau visualization software to apply audit risk assessment techniques and identify anomalous transactions that require further testing.
In addition, for her work as a reviewer, Cunningham received the 2020 Award for Outstanding Service to Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory. Covering internal and external auditing and other attestation activities, AJPT focuses on improving the practice and theory of auditing. Cunningham serves on the editorial board for the journal and was one of three people honored with this award.
“Not many awards are handed out at this conference,” Cunningham says, “so it was a shock and an honor to be receiving two of them.”
