UT Haslam’s Chief Medical Officer Leadership Program Inaugural Cohort Set to Graduate

March 13, 2024

The inaugural Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Accelerator Online Leadership Program cohort, consisting of nine senior medical professionals from across seven states, will graduate this April. The University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Haslam College of Business presents the program as part of its Graduate and Executive Education (GEE) offerings, and it program brought “working lunch.” every other week. Each month focuses on a new area of leadership, including setting a vision, coaching top performers and driving integrated solutions.

According to Jim Rosenberg, director of corporate engagement for GEE’s healthcare division, being a CMO requires a different mindset from that of departmental or service line healthcare leadership.

“As a CMO, you are making decisions and guiding initiatives that involve your executive team, physicians, clinicians and administrative staff from all areas of your organization,” Rosenberg explains. “What new CMOs gain in the CMO Accelerator are the leadership skills required to influence, motivate and deliver results when direct supervisory authority is no longer enough to make things happen. Our participants gain new insights into the CMO position through their work with faculty and experienced CMOs, and they build a network of CMO peers with which to exchange ideas.”

Effective Executive Education

Rahul Shah, senior vice president at Washington D.C.’s Children’s National Hospital and member of the CMO Accelerator program’s inaugural cohort, praises the faculty for finding the right educational prescription for CMOs.

“It is hard to get executive education right for high-level professionals,” Shah says. “This teaching team has nailed it — this course is simply phenomenal. The faculty discussions are outstanding and the applied assignments, which seem simple, are stimulating and provocative, challenging us to look more deeply at our own thinking and work. We are putting the ideas to work right away in our organization, and I’m already seeing the impact. It is a transformational experience overall.”

Graduating participants receive a certificate from the college recognizing their demonstrated capabilities and leadership skills necessary to carry out the role of CMO.

Enrollment has already begun for the next cohort, which will meet from noon to 1:30 p.m. (Central time) every other Thursday from May 16 to November 7. More information on the CMO Accelerator Online Leadership program is available online.

Haslam is excited to continue the program and guide another class toward healthcare excellence. “We look forward to helping our next cohort of chief medical officers develop and refine their skills to become even more effective, influential leaders,” says Rosenberg.
