Course Description

This course approaches diversity and inclusion as business tools that drive organizational success.   Course objectives are:

  • Recognize diversity as shaped by culture and reflective of our unique experiences and self-development
  • Develop a working knowledge of diversity and inclusion as principles that will help you effectively lead people and teams
  • Understand the business case for diversity and inclusion
  • Become more self-aware of the filters and pre-dispositions we all bring to workplace discussions
  • Become familiar with strategies and tools we can all use to minimize conscious and unconscious bias

Upon completing the course, participants should be prepared to participate in and/or lead diverse teams in ways that encourage communication and sharing of ideas, both common and unique. Participants should be comfortable with the concepts of diversity and inclusion as tools to build and leverage a diverse and inclusive workforce and workplace.

Duration & Dates

Each session 4 hours (four 1 hour sessions)
Each workshop is 60 minutes and fully interactive – no lecturing.

Workshop 1 – What is unconscious bias, who’s susceptible, and why should business leaders care?
Pre-Work:  Watch and respond to a 10-minute video called Why do so many incompetent men become leaders?

Workshop 2 – How could unconscious bias impact unit performance?
Pre-Work:  Complete the 20-item Organizational Excellence Survey.

Workshop 3 --  Applying a diversity and inclusion framework to real-life situations.
Pre-Work:  Read and respond to three brief (one-page) case studies.

Workshop 4 – How to adopt a diversity and inclusion mindset as a leader.
Pre-Work:  Read and respond to two brief (one-page) articles called Go Deep and It’s Not Blame.
